Artist Biography Born in Massachusetts in 1961 and raised in Pennsylvania, Michael Gullberg left the traditional lifestyle of the East Coast at an early age. Since arriving in Los Angeles 26 years ago, Michael has been involved in his own self-directed Art School. With a punk-era DIY ethic, he has taught himself various art forms, including improvisational comedy, writing, filmmaking, drawing, painting and woodworking. In his paintings, Michael’s imagery rides the line between surrealism and abstraction. His beings, birds, animals, plants and landscapes remind us of this world but lead us into the spiritual world of our dreams and imaginations – the place where our true selves and our own "salvation" lies. His paintings take time to digest and require the viewer to meditate with eyes open. Images make themselves more apparent over time and with repeated viewing. Like music floating in our minds, his paintings allow our imaginations to drift in thought and memories. And just as we do with music, we take away our own individual meanings and interpretations of each of his paintings. Michael is currently bringing his woodworking skills into his paintings by using reclaimed wood panels and hardwood cutoffs collected over the years from various woodshops throughout Los Angeles. The combination of his painting style and his unique custom wood frames adds yet another dimension to his creative works and promises to elevate his paintings to another level. |
